Unconventional tools

I have always been one to stray from the beaten path, drawn to unconventional ideas, tools, and programs. It’s hard to pinpoint the exact reason behind this inclination. Perhaps it stems from my upbringing or even my genetics. Whatever the cause, I’ve never been one to follow the crowd and do what everyone else is doing just because it’s popular.

Enter the Gymstick

People frequently approach me, curious, asking, “What is a Gymstick?” I find it fascinating that these questions arise not only in fitness-oriented environments or sporting branded clothing but also in unexpected places like the airport, on a train, at the post office, or even at the car wash. Interestingly, these queries predominantly come from individuals, not in the fitness industry. While I don’t get asked about standard fitness equipment such as steps, kettlebells, or body attack, the mysterious Gymstick ignites curiosity.

My standard response to the question is simple yet intriguing: “A Gymstick is essentially a fibreglass stick with two rubber bands.” This answer naturally leads to the follow-up query, “What do you do with it?” Now, I can’t help but smile and say, “Anything you want.” Yes, a stick and two rubber bands have revolutionised how I perceive exercise, movement, and function. They have challenged many of my preconceived beliefs and opinions, prompting me to question them repeatedly. But why does it work? While there are numerous explanations, there is a lack of concrete research on why people with Parkinson’s disease experience improved mobility; athletes witness enhanced performance, or even why I, after years of teaching, have become physically stronger without sustaining injuries. Nevertheless, the experience of using the Gymstick feels undeniably good.

Simply effective

The Gymstick is a clever tool, embodying the essence of all great ideas: simplicity in design and effectiveness in achieving desired results. If you have never engaged in a workout involving the Gymstick or utilised it yourself, I urge you to challenge your preconceived notions and try it. You might discover what all the commotion is about. Much like it did for me, it could transform how you perceive movement and function, opening up new possibilities and perspectives.

Its versatility allows for a wide range of exercises targeting various muscle groups, improving overall functional fitness. It helps improve strength, endurance, balance, and stability, all of which are integral to optimal performance in daily life activities.

Safe and accessible for older adults

Moreover, the Gymstick holds tremendous value for training older adults, providing them with an effective tool to counteract the adverse effects of aging and offering a safe and accessible means to achieve these goals. Resistance training has been shown to reduce the risk of chronic diseases like diabetes, heart disease, and arthritis, which are common concerns among the aging population.
