What a wonderful feeling it is to be weightless and suspended, literally floating in liquid. No other conventional form of group exercise or fitness program comes close to the uniqueness of exercising in deep water. The sensation of reaching down with your feet but not touching anything solid challenges the neuromuscular system’s lifetime of familiarity with the effects of gravity. In fact, proprioception can be so altered that exercising in deep water can very effectively improve coordination and neuromuscular function.

Age – is there an age limit in this industry?
Is there such a thing as ‘too old to teach’?
Of course everyone would poo poo the idea, but it is here.
There are two clubs that I am aware of in Melbourne that are now asking ‘older’ instructors to move aside for younger instructors. The excuse? One is to ‘give’ new people a go, which is ludicrous considering there is a massive shortage of group exercise instructors and the other is a ‘younger’ instructor will attract ‘younger’ people. Let me think…why do participants enjoy a class? I believe it is because it is delivered by a experienced, enthusiastic, passionate and engaging instructor. I don’t see age here. I do not want to discriminate against any age as brilliant instructors come in all sorts of shapes, sizes, ages, and cultures, but to be asked to move aside because you are past your used by date is definitely going beyond what this industry is all about. I thought fitness was for everyone. Perhaps it is, but only a certain age can teach classes.

Health and fitness has always played an important role in my life, so after a Breast Cancer diagnosis 4 years ago, at age 45, I changed career paths from a stressful office role to Fitness/Aqua Instructor, and more recently have started my own Aquatic Personal Training Business called Aquatone Personal Training. The mental and physical health benefits for me have been huge – not only in the transition from Breast Cancer Survivor to Thriver, but also in regards to managing back pain and mobility from a 45 degree scoliosis curvature.
