A beginner again
Very shortly after we are born there are a lot of ‘firsts’. Our first big breath, our first cry, our first feed. Then it is our first smile (genuine), first step and our first word. We actually have hundreds and thousands of first experiences in our tender years. Then there is our first friend, our first exam, our first kiss, our first car, our first job. By the time we hit our 30’s those firsts really start slowing down. A lot of the experiences that we encounter become variations and in fact, when we have a ‘first’ experience, it is usually more challenging to deal with.

Gymstick Muscle change to format
As of 2013 Gymstick International will be encouraging instructors to change the structure of the class so that there is NO STICK warm up. The change has been due to the following reasons (and they are not because it is dangerous or otherwise) 2.) After the warm up, the instructor usually has to teach the technique to quickly put on the bands and how to adjust the resistance. This decreases heart rate and somewhat lowers the motivation levels in the class. We are finding that starting the class having taught these techniqeus avoids this little ‘break’ in the workout. 3.) Warm ups with the stick are not given enough attention at the initial training. This has resulted in instructors deisgning their own warm ups. Sometimes these warm ups are not well designed and become like an aerobics class which defeats the purpose of keeping Gymstick simply effective. We have done some extensive experimenting with starting the class with a Trio and have had much success. Any squat Trio can be used for the warm up and in the future, Gymstick Online will be removing the Gymstick exercises for the warm up and substituting them for appropriate Trio warm ups.

Pelvic Floor First
Bladder and bowel control problems affect almost 4.8 million Australians – of which 80 percent are women. As a fitness professional you are ideally placed to identify people with, or at risk of, pelvic floor problems, and support them with a pelvic floor safe program. This is particularly important for people at increased risk of pelvic floor problems. The Pelvic Floor First website (http://www.pelvicfloorfirst.org.au/) provides you with information about the pelvic floor and pelvic floor safe exercises. You may also want to view the resource Promoting Pelvic Floor Safe Exercise. The Continence Foundation of Australia has partnered with the Australian Fitness Network to deliver a 2 part online education course. Exercise of the month – Glute Stretches
This month we share with you a couple of fabulous Gymstick stretches for the glutes. The first picture demonstrates how you can assist and intensify a regular glute stretch by using the Gymstick behind the leg, on top of which the opposite ankle is placed. In the second picture, the Gymstick is placed on the outside of the shoe offering leverage to increase the stretch.
