I met Sofya several years ago when this young woman decided to become a group fitness instructor and I was the presenter for the course. Before I started delivering the group exercise course for CAE, I delivered the education for Victoria University at the South Melbourne campus and Sofya and several other enthusiastic women took part. As the group exercise coordinator for the City Baths, I was always on the lookout for an instructor that showed the promise of being trainable and had the ‘instructor’ personality. Sofya fitted the job description and I approached her for mentorship. This was the beginning of a long working and personal friendship. Sofya is amazing.
Firstly, she became the most popular instructor at the City Baths with her Tae Box workouts (for those new to the industry – a martial arts based workout) and other freestyle programs. Having convinced her to assist me with a presentation for FILEX at short notice (the 3 other presenters that were going to present with me all pulled out), she taught with a smile and like a pro. She always had this ‘can do’ attitude that I loved and I feel like I learnt a lot about how work can be fun. I will never forget when she was pregnant with her first child and had terrible morning sickness. I walked into the group exercise room to check in on her during a class and she was holding a lemon to her nose as the scent helped her feel better. The class didn’t mind and nor did I, but it still brings a smile to my face to the lengths that she would go to, to ensure she still enjoyed her classes.
After the birth of her first child, we drifted apart as she now had a family, but reconnected a few years later when she was facing some personal challenges. Today, she is still a charismatic instructor that still balances family, teaching and does it with joy. I don’t remember Sofya ever complaining about the challenges of doing all of that. She just does what is required and she does it with a smile and never ending enthusiasm.
Now we are close friends having shared so much history together. We both did the Booty Barre course together (we have never done a course together before) and being partners for most of the activities was so funny. I know that the clients that she is in contact with also have the same pleasure.
Mum of two, running a very successful personal training business and teaching group fitness classes, Sofya is a hero to her clients, classes and to me. She is now my teacher and I, her student, learning how to live life with joy and passion.
A Sad Goodbye Over 10 years ago, I met a woman who would change the course of my life and help me shape the business that I have today. She was someone I met in a Cert III fitness course that I was delivering, and her intelligence and initiative made me take notice (handing out [...]
