Full Body Vibration Training
What if 40 minutes of exercise, three times a week, could help you improve balance, move better, and reduce your chances of falling – without long gym sessions or heavy weights?
That’s the power of full body vibration training (FBV). It’s a type of exercise where you perform simple movements or hold positions on a platform that gently vibrates. These vibrations stimulate your muscles and nervous system in a unique way, leading to more activation in less time. It’s especially helpful for those who want to feel more stable, confident, and capable as they age.
Stay Strong and Upright
A large study from Belgium followed 220 healthy adults aged 60 to 80 years over 12 months. Participants were divided into three groups:
- FBV Training Group – This group used full body vibration platforms three times a week, with sessions lasting up to 40 minutes, including warm-up and cool-down.
- Traditional Fitness Group – They followed longer workouts (approx. 1.5 hours) including cardio, resistance training, balance, and flexibility work.
- Control Group – They continued their normal daily routines with no structured training.
Over the year, all participants were tested multiple times using balance assessments on moving platforms, in reduced-vision settings, and while responding to unstable surfaces.
Here’s what stood out:
- The FBV group significantly reduced the number of falls in the most challenging balance tests, even more so than the traditional exercise group.
- They also improved their responses to changes in surface position, like when a floor tilts slightly (toes up or toes down). These types of sudden shifts often mimic the kinds of unexpected stumbles we might face in everyday life.
- Unlike the other groups, the FBV group showed better anticipatory postural control, which means their body could prepare for changes before they lost balance.
Even though all participants were healthy and didn’t have pre-existing balance issues, the full body vibration group still showed clear benefits, which suggests this method could be even more valuable for those with mobility concerns or a history of falls.
“After one year of full body vibration training, fall frequency reduced and the response to surface rotations was improved.” – Gait & Posture, Vol. 26
Independence Matters
Falls are one of the biggest risks for adults over 60. They can lead to injury, hospital stays, and a loss of confidence. But falls don’t have to be a normal part of ageing. You can train your body to react faster and stabilise more effectively, and you don’t need hours in a gym to do it.
FBV training stimulates both sensory and motor systems. The vibration signals are picked up by receptors in your muscles and joints, which prompt fast, reflex-like contractions in your leg, core, and postural muscles. Over time, this helps improve muscle function, coordination, and balance – the key ingredients in fall prevention.
