Welcome to the October edition of Marietta's newsletter!
I want to say a huge thank you to the 6 Program Coordinators that recently attended a workshop that Ange La Scala and I conducted last month. Judy Davenport, Khairul Nor (Ivanhoe Aquatic Centre), Kris Anderson, Debbie Cowan (both from Nunawading Leisure Centre), Kirsty Nield (Adelaide) and Kay Gooiker (Casey ARC). In 2006, Ange and I were sitting around chewing the fat discussing the merits and foibles of program coordinators that we worked for when an idea was born. One of the greatest challenges for a Program Coordinator is learning how to do an effective job. There is no one let teach you the ropes, or tell you if you are on the right track, or if there is a better way to deal with a situation. No, this is simply left up to the individual to work it out. As most coordinators come from being an instructor, there is little preparation for the role and understanding the big picture and the strategies of dealing with a team of charismatic personalities, demanding customers and fulfilling the requirements of management. And so often, the glue that the coordinator is between these three groups of people can literally become unstuck. These 6 coordinators and the ones who have attended the education previously, are passionate about doing the best job they can. They want to find ways to improve their programming, strategies with dealing with difficult customers and most importantly, methods to keep instructors happy and enthusiastic in their desire to improve people's health and wellbeing. I thank them for taking the time to share and learn different ways to improve one of the most reliable ways to keep people exercising.
Also want to thank my colleague Ange. Still active in her role as the Program Coordinator at Melbourne University, Ange is constantly aspiring to be the best coordinator that she can be and hence in developing this education, her input as been invaluable. I very much enjoy our hourly sessions each week working on this project and know that moving forward in our own little way, we are making a contribution to our industry.
Article of the month. Margaret Sanger by Michelle Wright
Margaret Sanger was an American woman who opened the first birth control clinic in Brooklyn, USA in 1916. Sanger challenged the belief of the time that state, church and husbands had more control over women's reproductive bodies than the women themselves. Sanger worked with underprivileged women who were suffering dreadfully from frequent childbirths and self-induced abortions. Nine days after her birth control clinic opened, Sanger was arrested by the police for a 30-day stint in jail. As she was being transported away, women were seen running after the police cart yelling out "Tell me the secret! Tell me the secret!"

"I use the gym stick for my clients and myself. The gym stick improves balance, strength and core stability. It is great for an all over body work out, from a simple bicep curl to a compound movement. I have found it great for training anywhere; as it is portable and light weight and functional. My clients have found it more fun than just lifting weights. I would recommend it for anyone. Give it a go; you will be surprised."Allison Jenkins

Setting Sail with Gymstick
"Recently I took part in my first Gymstick course run by Marietta one week before going on holiday. It was the Gymstick for PT workshop held in Narrewarren and I purchased a Bootcamp Gymstick with a view to using it in my Personal Training sessions
My alternative motive was to take the Gymstick away with me to maintain my fitness. You may be thinking what's so special about that! Well our holiday was on board a sailing ship. A clipper to be precise. There were 159 passengers on board and 80 crew, no gym, two small plunge pools one of which enabled anyone at the bar to peer through the portholes into the pool.... The Aqua fitness class was viewed by all and sundry!

Exercise of the Month- Swiss Ball Step Touch
A step touch is executed when one foot steps to one side and the other moves across to join it e.g. right foot steps to right, left foot steps to right and taps floor ready to return back across to left. Repeat the movement to left side by starting with the left foot. This exercise shifts the bodyweight from side to side and so that body is challenged to stay in the centre and on top of the ball. Progressive levels include:
1. add arm actions 2. travel around the ball 3. increase repetition of step touch tap across 4. lift foot on the tap together 'soccer kick' 5. on tap out, keep leg off the floor
Step touch is one of the very few moves that can travel around the ball. This adds interest and fun and it can be a goal to move around the ball in fewer and fewer step touches. This will increase heart rate as the steps required to move around the ball will become wider and wider.
