"Often people ask me 'what type of class is your favourite?' I actually don’t have one as I enjoy all types – Hi/Lo, Step, Swiss Ball, Muscle Conditioning and Funk. Choreography and education are my two passions."

Overview

Aerobics - the name Group Fitness has been known as, has had a relatively short history. The term 'aerobics' was originally coined by Dr. Kenneth Cooper in the late 1960’s. Classes consisted of many repetitions of high impact moves and choreographed dance routines. Instructors, were usually ex-dancers or regular fitness junkies. We'd be hard pressed not to mention the leotard era of the late 80's and early 90's...

Group Fitness

Group Fitness has come a long way since then, as the industry has grown and become more professional. Instructors now are required to be qualified and registered with various fitness organisations who, as well as their other services, ensure that instructors maintain their knowledge and the latest trends and scientific findings. In fact. only in the past 10 years has the term aerobics, changed to Group Fitness (or sometimes - Group Exercise). Classes styles have diversified to include cycle, Pilates, yoga, just to name a few.

As the term suggests, group fitness has grown in popularity, particularly with women who enjoy exercising in a group. Now with fitness clubs springing up on every corner and media focus on the health and well-being of the population, the search for the ideal ‘workout’ is more prevalent then ever before.

Why Group Fitness?

  • As a workout, for most people, it is a time efficient way for developing fitness and muscle tone.
  • A class is under constant supervision by a professional, rather than an individual left to their own devices on a gym floor
  • Motivation is one of the most challenging factors that a person has to deal with in regards to maintaining a fitness regime. With an instructor committed entirely to providing the workout and entertainment, finding the ‘motivation’ to attend is not difficult
  • Variety is a consideration for any fitness regime. On any fitness club time table, there is an array of class types and styles from wellness to hard core cardiovascular workouts. Class types can include equipment based workouts eg; cycle, step classes and barbell workouts that would be hard to replicate in a gym environment or at home
  • The social aspect is an important draw card for not only women, but also teenagers and the mature population. Having a friend or a group of acquaintances to workout with, creates more reasons to participate in a group fitness program

A class testimonial for Marietta

Alan - Melbourne City Baths

"I want to thank you for the last two and half years of putting up some "doofis" (me) who knew nothing and was totally uncoordinated but persisted as the classes were great fun and you instructed in a way that made it fun to learn the routines.

It's great to go into other gyms and keep in time with the rest of the class, much to the surprise of the instructors, which is all thanks to you."
