Funk

Funk is a class that originated from the East Coast of USA. It combines both jazz dance and hip hop in a fusion of choreography that is very achievable for the average ‘non dancer’.

Funk is:

  • achievable and not too hard to pick up
  • is fun
  • has a workout component

Funk is not taught like an aerobics class, where the class is constantly moving, instead it is taught more a like a dance routine. This means that each individual move is taught before it is added on to the rest of the choreography. Each move is firstly taught at half tempo, which is slower than how the move will be finally performed. Often people have more success picking up moves if they can see the development of the move, and how slow tempo then translates into faster tempo.

Funk is very much about attitude and music. Having started in the 1970’s music for funk classes can vary from classic funk, to old skool and finally Contempory top of the charts hits. The beats per minute are usually about 130 beats per minutes, though faster or slower music can also be used.

Clothing worn for these types of classes can be anything from tight and revealing to loose layers that are comfortable to move in. This is also a form of expression for the individual in the class. Generally speaking, any form of fitness wear is appropriate when participating in a funk class within a group fitness environment.
